Working engineers have less time but more experience to draw on. This plan spends that time where it matters: the gaps your target roles actually care about, one convincing project, and focused applications.

Principles

  • Start from real job descriptions, not generic lists.
  • Your current job is evidence: mine it for stories, scale and trade-offs you handled.
  • Apply while preparing in the final weeks. Waiting until you feel “ready” usually means waiting too long.

The plan

  1. Stage 1: Days 1–10: Audit and target

List target roles and required skills from real job descriptions; rate yourself honestly against them.

    Typical effort
    5–6 hours a week
    Outcome
A written gap list and a shortlist of target companies and roles.
  2. Stage 2: Days 11–40: Close the top gaps

Study the two or three biggest gaps only, with hands-on practice.

    Typical effort
    8–10 hours a week
    Outcome
Each gap has a small working example you can show.
  3. Stage 3: Days 41–60: One strong project

Build or upgrade one project that matches your target roles, with tests and documentation.

    Typical effort
    8–10 hours a week
    Outcome
A project you can demo and explain in five minutes.
  4. Stage 4: Days 61–75: Interview preparation

SQL drills, Spark and design questions, behavioural stories.

    Typical effort
    10 hours a week
    Outcome
You pass timed mock rounds in each interview type.
  5. Stage 5: Days 76–90: Focused applications

Tailored applications to the shortlist, referrals where possible, and a weekly review of responses.

    Typical effort
    6–8 hours a week
    Outcome
A steady pipeline of interviews and notes on what to improve.
